Chippewa Flowage Report from lg3

Then-Current Conditions : 28F / -2C, Clear - 2:53 PM CST Nov. 18

Hello everyone!

Well, I'm watching the weather and fearing the worst for next week - as far as fishing is concerned.  It looks possible that there will be too much ice for open water fishing, but NOT thick enough ice to ice fish.

I did receive a Moose report that ice has formed in the bays at this point.  he's still having luck tho, including a 20" the other day.

Hope everyone else is doing well,

Lar

walleyemaxx, November 18, 2008 - 5:04 PM:
Lar, I hope to be ice fishing this weekend. Lakes are skimmed over right now, and should have a good three inches by sat. I'll let you know how i do. If all you see is blub blub, that means the ice was to thin. Tight lines walleyemaxx

DancesWithWalleyes, November 18, 2008 - 5:14 PM:
3", you are crazy. WalleyeMax be careful. Not worth falling in, for a few fish.

Ellie, November 18, 2008 - 5:24 PM:
Hey Lar! Good to hear from you! I was starting to worry that you liked the Big Apple and were staying there for good. Glad to see your posts again!

Dan H, November 18, 2008 - 5:45 PM:
Hey Larry, just making sure you stayed out of the "blueberry" and "rasberry" district while you where in teh big apple? Hope all is well! Remember the apple and strawberry districts are the safest places to be!!

Ellie, November 18, 2008 - 6:36 PM:
Dan, it's too bad you're young and can still remember every darn little thing!!

lg3, November 18, 2008 - 6:50 PM:
LOLOLOL.... Someone better explain that one. NOT ME. Anyway, I was in the "LaGuardia district". One thing that stinks about travel is that if you choose the convenience of a hotel a block away from an airport, the neighborhood is never gonna be great. Will be going back in a couple weeks and will have to try out the Strawberry Distict. Hopefully will get to see "stuff" this time, too.

Ellie, November 19, 2008 - 5:48 AM:
NOT ME EITHER!! How 'bout we just FORGET THE WHOLE THING?? Okay? Christmas is coming and everyone should be nice, not naughty, right?

walleyemaxx, November 19, 2008 - 3:00 PM:
Ellie, your right! I'm going to send you a picture of brett farve for christmas.

Have fun in the big apple you poor sonofagun

lg3, November 13, 2008 - 3:58 PM:
Thanks, Maxx. Talk more on Sunday! By the way, thanks again for the espresso. It *was* delicious - I even contacted Eagle River Roasters about getting on a mail plan.

lg3, November 14, 2008 - 11:52 PM:
well, as im sure its been said many times, New York is no Hayward, WI. Having said that, I'm having an excellent time here. I got in late last nite, to my hotel by midnite. For all of you that doubt I "really" work..haha..I was in meetings from 11am til midnite tonite, and then round II tomorrow. not had time to see anything really, except the inside of conference rooms and restaurants. Tomorrow's meetings are in Chinatown however!

Ellie, November 15, 2008 - 2:50 PM:
Wow! Sounds very executive-ish. I'm very impressed. Did you wear your LRGRAF sweatshirt or your Lazy Mutt sweatshirt? Can't wait to hear more about your trip.

Hose, November 16, 2008 - 3:32 PM:
Did the Bears show up today or did they forfeit?

walleyemaxx, November 17, 2008 - 10:30 AM:
Da bears da bears da bears da bears da bears da bears SUCK!! Ellie, how'd the viqueens do?

Hose, November 17, 2008 - 11:47 AM:
As Ellies spokesman, I believe they lost to Tampa. All three should be tied in the standings.

Ellie, November 17, 2008 - 1:18 PM:
It's true, the Viqueens lost to Tampa 19-13. I was at work and unable to watch the misery. It's a tough year. Hope everyone in lrgraf.com land is doing well.

Hose, November 17, 2008 - 4:19 PM:
See Ellie I had no disparaging remarks to say about the Vikings. I know what it is like like to lose a close game, like the week before last in the DOME.I also have a son who lost money on that game.

JRN, November 18, 2008 - 1:00 PM:
GO PACK GO!!!

walleyemaxx, November 18, 2008 - 5:01 PM:
sing it JRN. Just not in chinese

Upper Chippewa Basin fisheries report (Price, Rusk, Sawyer Taylor and inland Ashland and Iron counties) - Seasonably cold weather has kept fishing pressure to a minimum and only a few die-hard anglers have been venturing out on local waters. Most of the fishing pressure continues to be for musky and nearly all of these late-season musky anglers are dragging large suckers around. Success has been fair, with a few catches of 36 to 40-inch fish have been reported, but several anglers have said that the musky just seem to be hitting and dropping the suckers. A few walleye anglers have also been sighted, but action has been generally slow. Water temperatures have fallen into the low 40s and, with single-digit temperatures in the last few nights, some ponds and small lakes have developed a thin layer of skim ice. A few of the larger lakes do have some shoreline ice in the shallow back bays, but full ice cover is still a couple of weeks away.

ooooooooo....has anyone tried this?

Dan H, November 12, 2008 - 2:58 PM:
its a rice beer, you dont want to drink a rice beer

lg3, November 12, 2008 - 3:38 PM:
why not

Ellie, November 12, 2008 - 7:47 PM:
I didn't see anything about it being a rice beer. I looked at all the videos on the site. How do you know this Dan? Does it taste bad?

Dan H, November 12, 2008 - 7:59 PM:
Its budweiser, every product they make is a "rice beer"

Derek, November 12, 2008 - 9:22 PM:
Anheuser is marketing this as a 100% malt beer. This would make rice absent from the ingredients list. For those that have played around in home brewing, you can use rice extract to add alcohol content without changing the flavor much. The more rice, the lighter the taste. Americans tend to prefer a lighter drinking beer so rice plays a perfect role. Oh..it's cheap too!

lg3, November 12, 2008 - 10:37 PM:
interesting. Shane had mentioned this to me one time at the lodge. This was before the introduction of Lazy Mutt of course, and they had run out of Bud Light at the bar, so I went to get a Miller Lite and Shane said not to do that because I was mixing a rice beer with barley or wheat or whatever. now i see what he meant! this is interesting. either way, expect a bud report within a few days.

Hose, November 13, 2008 - 7:01 AM:
I don't think "Blue Smoothies" has rice in it.

Trav, November 13, 2008 - 8:27 AM:
I would also guess the "Helicopter Shot" doesn't involve any rice. Unless of course you are doing Sake Bombs at the end of it.

DNR call center available to answer weekend, evening questions

MADISON -- A shout out from an angler out on a lake at dusk or a hunter in his stand at dawn is becoming routine. It’s all in a day’s work for the Department of Natural Resources Call Center, which brought expanded hours and services on line one year ago this month.

“Our customers don’t have to wait for traditional daytime, weekday business hours to get help. If you have a question about tagging your deer, the slot size for your fish, or want to enroll in a safety class, we’re here for you seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.,” said Diane Brookbank, Customer Service and Licensing Director for DNR. The center offers a toll-free number, an on-line, live chat room, and customer service specialists speaking Hmong and Spanish as well as English.

The expanded hours Call Center – unique among state natural resources agencies – has handled more than 239,000 customer contacts in the last year, one third of them at night and on weekends. Some 8,700 more customers have taken advantage of on-line chats. The highly trained staff responds to a wide variety of DNR issues, from clarifying regulations on hunting and fishing to restrictions on firewood transportation. As a result, state game wardens are feeling a little like the Maytag Repairman – they’ve experienced a 90 percent reduction in routine telephone calls -- but it has allowed them to dedicate more time and energy to public safety and wildlife programs.

The most common phone-in questions Customer Service specialists get involve clarification of deer season rules and regulations, registering for a safety education class, and requirements for registering a boat, snowmobile or ATV. The operators also field tips about suspected fish and game violations and possible land or water toxic spills. Operators have gotten calls from lost hunters and have helped guide rescue teams to them, and have gotten off-beat questions like, “I’m walleye fishing, can you tell me what one looks like?”

DNR created the Customer Service Call Center by reallocating positions and workload internally – the enhanced public service came at no additional cost to license buyers or taxpayers.

“We’re pretty proud of what we’ve done here. People recreate throughout the day and on weekends. We need to serve them on their schedule, not ours. We’re got great service specialists who love their work. Call us,” said Brookbank.

Operating under the tag, “We’re here for you,” the public can contact the call center seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., at 1-888-WDNR INFo (1-888-936-7463). To report spills call 1-800-943-0003 or to report suspected fish and game violations call 1-800-TIP-WDNR (1-800-847-9367.)

lg3, November 11, 2008 - 4:06 PM:
lol. i dont think that question is strange at all. i certainly have days on the water where i forget what a walleye looks like.

lg3, November 11, 2008 - 5:17 PM:
OH....i DO have a question i should call them about. possession limit. I've always thought it was double the applicable bag limit (so 6). someone told me tho that its the STATE's applicable bag limit (so 10). I won't name names in case theyre wrong, but you know who you are. haha Will find out and report back.

Greg T., November 11, 2008 - 7:04 PM:
Hmmm...I'm guessing that if your freezer is considered to be "on the shore" of the Chip you should only be allowed 6. If your freezer is in IL you should be allowed 10 even if you caught them all on the Chip.

walleyemaxx, November 11, 2008 - 11:19 PM:
possession limit is the state wide limit of five doubled. To get a possession limit from the chip, you would have to catch three a day for three days, than one on the forth day. Better yet, eat them babies fresh! Hey lar, did the expresso machine come yet? Hows that guides blend coffee?

walleyemaxx, November 12, 2008 - 10:14 AM:
Ok every one, get your handy dandy 2008-2009 fishing reg. booklet out and follow along. On the bottom of page 6, It says statewide fishing restrictions. Then it starts IT IS ILLEGAL- Then go to page 7. On the bottom it starts a paragraph on SEASONS,BAG LIMITS AND LENGTH LIMITS. Now kiddies, go to page 8. Notice the little dots on the left. Go to the fourth one down. That line states you cannot keep more than your TOTAL daily bag limit for any species. That is how a philadelphia lawyer says you CAN keep twice your TOTAL daily bag limit. Now go to page 10. Yea i can wait........Ok, now we are all here, Notice on the bottom of the page. It defines the DAILY BAG/TOTAL DAILY BAG LIMITS. Now read that whole paragragh. In short, the daily bag limit is the lake limit. The total daily bag limit is the statewide limit. Now read the chart above that says the TOTAL DAILY BAG LIMITS FOR WIS. FISH SPECIES. The very bottom one is the walleye TOTAL daily bag. It is five. Now remember on page8, it says we can have in our possession twice the TOTAL daily bag limit. As long as you follow the law regarding DAILY bag limits for the body of water you are fishing, You can have 10 walleyes per licensed angler in that particular household in the freezer. Now if you have the maxx. number if walleyes in your freezer, you cannot even fish for them. Go to page 8. Notice the little dots on the left again. The third one down tells you that. But the best advice, is never freeze fish eat them fresh! That way you always have an excuse to go fishing. Tight lines every one. I'll be ice fishing in a couple days now by the looks of things. walleyemaxx

lg3, November 12, 2008 - 12:03 PM:
lol, Maxx. yes, how did we all not realize this? it seems...so clear!

Fred, November 12, 2008 - 7:24 PM:
The key word reguarding the Chipp is "ceded territories" i.e. to yield or grant typically by treaty. So, given that, toss the limit regs in the lake for the Chipp. Some years I have held a lic. from MN WI and Canada with Walleye in my freezer from all three.

Dan from Green Bay, November 13, 2008 - 8:52 AM:
Been fishing the Big Chip for 30 years. Camping on Boy Scout Island. Larry love your sight. But thought I would give heads up regarding DNR...My son is working as an LTE for the DNR as an invavsive species technician in the State Forests in Northern Wi. His funding runs out in December, do to the now 5 billion budget deficit in the State, no positions will be filled or replaced. If you go to the DNR website, all openings have been scrubbed from the site....As currently understood no positions will be replaced do to retirement....This could create a big void in the services provided by the DNR going forward....Can't wait till the Second Weekend in May, when I head to the Chip.....Good Fishing to all....

There is never a bad cheese lol. Try putting it in a mayo jar, let it sit in the sun and then use it. Thats what the old Switzers do.
